Introduction
************

FAKERAT is an enhancement of the Caltech VLBI package program FAKE
and incorporates many features that aid in the planning and
understanding of experiments with the Space VLBI missions
Radioastron. FAKE was written by T. J. Pearson (Caltech) for
simulating ground based VLBI experiments and was extended to Space
VLBI by D. L. Meier (JPL).

The software has been further developed in D.W. Murphy's FAKESAT
    program on the VSOP project
FAKERAT_MENU is a X-windows based interactive menu program
that drives the FAKERAT and FAKESAT program.

Installation Procedure
**********************

     - Follow the 6 step installation procedure.

     - The software can be installed on Linux workstations that run UNIX.

      - Steps 1 to 4 and 5 need to be performed once by each user in a directory
they can read and write files in.

      - Step 5 needed to be performed once by someone like a system
        administrator

Note: both latex and xdvi are required if the interactive help
facility is to be used. The use of this feature is optional.

Step 1
******

If you do not have the PGPLOT graphics package already installed on
your machine, obtain it by anonymous ftp from astro.caltech.edu and
     install it.

Step 2
******

    Use http://www.asc.rssi.ru/radioastron/software/soft
to get "full binary package" - fakerat-64.v23.tar.gz (is tested to work with most
Linus distributions). Some useful information you can find in HANDBOOK.

Step 3
******

Go to the directory in which you want to install the software,
which we will call x, uncompress fakerat-64.v23.tar.gz and extract
    the relevant files:

     cd x
     gzip -d fakeratlib-64.v24.tar.gzip
     tar xf fakeratlib-64.v24.tar

The directory x/fakeratlib-64.v23 will be created with the following
    files and libraries:

README
astro
fakerat
fakerat_menu
fakeratlib.a
fakeratm
orbit.a
vlblib.a
x/user/orbit/RA161217-180527_v2.org
x/user/tex/*.tex
x/user/.worldmap
x/user/fakerat_init
x/user/fakerat_system
x/user/menu_colors
x/user/menurat_defaults
x/user/menurat_defaults.1
x/user/run
x/user/sources.cat
x/user/stations.cat

Step 4
******

Various soft-links and auxiliary files need to be set up
in the directory in which individual users wish to perform space VLBI
simulations, which we will call y. Each user should do the the following:

     cd y
     cp -a x/fakerat-64.v23/user/* .
     csh
     set path = ( $path . /usr/local/fakerat)

Step 5
******

    cd /usr/local
    ln -s ~x/fakerat-64.v23 fakerat

Step 6:
*******

Edit the C-shell script file called run to setup a few environmental
variables required by PGPLOT. This file contains an explanation of what
   to do.

Perhaps the single biggest error when running fakesat is for the menu to
appear but with no words. The reason for this is that PGPLOT cannot find
   the font grfont.dat file.

For versions of PGPLOT older than 5.0:

It is assumed that the grfont.dat file is in the /usr/local/vlb/pgplot
directory on SUN workstation or the /usr/src/pgplot directory on HP
workstations. If this is not the case, the PGPLOT_FONT environmental
variable is used to specify the full pathname of the grfont.dat file.

For versions of PGPLOT 5.0 or higher:

The PGPLOT_FONT environmental variable is used to specify the pathname of the
grfont.dat file. If PGPLOT_FONT does not exist then the PGPLOT_DIR
environmental variable is used to specify the location of this file.

For versions of PGPLOT 5.0 or higher the program pgxwin_server is also
required. PGPLOT searches for this file in the directory specified
by the environmental variable PGPLOT_DIR and in each directory in
your path. If it cannot find this program then the X-windows driver, which is
   required by fakesat, cannot start.

Running fakesat
***************

Provided the above installation steps have been completed, to
   run fakesat. Simply type:

   run

(for run to work the current directory . must be in the user's path)

Please refer to a the fakesat users' manual fakesat_user_guide.ps
   in x/fakesat_v3.00/doc for more details.

Notes
*****

1. fakesat_init only has to be run once and not every time you wish
    to run the software.

2. Although the program can be run by either typing fakesat_menu or run
it is recommended that run be used. run is a c-shell script that can
perform many functions. To find out more about run type run -h.

In order to aid novice users a simplified version of the interactive
menu system has been produced. This enables only a limited number of
parameters to be changed and options to be run. This should be quite
sufficient for most users. Indeed it can be quite dangerous for novice
users to change for example the spacecraft orbital elements as these
are parameters that the VLBI observer has no control over. This simplified
version of the menu is now the default. A more advanced user can obtain
the full range of options by typing run -c instead of simply run.

3. Some old pre-5.0 versions of the PGPLOT X-windows driver do not use the
PGPLOT_XW_CLICKLEFT environmental variable. These old versions of PGPLOT will
not work with fakesat. Upgrade to a new version of PGPLOT is the only
   solution.
